Basically it is a term for communication using body movements or gestures instead of, or in addition to, sounds, verbal language or other communication according to wikipedia. That sounds a lot more complicated than it is. Especially for your purposes.

We want to keep it simple. There are hundreds of different gestures and body positions that you can read but you probably do not have the time to spend learning what all of them mean. Nor do you need to know that much about reading body language.

What you say can be different from what you are thinking and feeling. We all do this all the time. For our purposes we mainly want to find out if our spouse is telling us the truth.

One of the basics of reading body language is if you have a habit of touching your nose while talking this is looked at as a sign of deception. It may be just a habit you have but if someone does not know you they may unconsciously interpret your gesture as you being untrustworthy.

So first you must know your spouse and the gestures he uses doing normal conversations with you. What we are looking for are body language signals that he does not use during your normal conversations. When he is not under the gun or has no pressure or reason to lie. This gives you the foundation you need to make reasonable assumptions as to if he is lying or not.
